Netherlands: AP publishes report on privacy complaints in 2019

The Dutch data protection authority ('AP') published, on 14 February 2020, its report ('the Report') on privacy complaints in 2019. In particular, the Report outlines that approximately 27,800 complaints regarding a possible privacy violation were filed in 2019, which represents a 79% increase from 2018. In addition, the Report highlights that the AP conducted 138 investigations in response to complaints, of which 25 resulted in the discovery of violations.

Moreover, the AP noted that it would like to commence investigations more frequently in the future, if it has sufficient capacity. Furthermore, the Report indicates that 15% of complaints relate to unsolicited advertising and 29% of complaints concerned a violation of a data subject right, such as the right to access and the right to erasure.
