Ontario: IPC announces entry into force of Part X of CYFSA

The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario ('IPC') announced, on 6 January 2020, that Part X of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017, S.O. 2017, c.14, Sched. 1 ('CYFSA') entered into force on 1 January 2020. In particular, Part X of the CYFSA provides children, youth, and families in Ontario with a legally protected right to request access and corrections to their personal information held by children’s aid societies and other services providers. Furthermore, under Part X of the CYFSA, service providers will have clear rules for collecting, using, and sharing clients’ personal information, requirements to protect client's privacy, requirements for improved transparency and accountability, and oversight from the IPC with respect to how they handle and share clients' personal information.
