USA: Rutter's announces payment card incident
Rutter's Dairy and Rutter's Farm Stores, Inc. announced, on 13 February 2020, that it had received a report suggesting that there may have been unauthorised access to data from payment cards that were used at some of Rutter's locations in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In particular, on 14 January 2020, the investigation identified evidence indicating that an unauthorised actor may have accessed payment card data from point of sale devices at some fuel pumps and inside some of Rutter's' convenience stores through malware installed on the payment processing systems.
In addition, Rutter's highlights that the malware did not copy data from all of the payment cards used during the period that it was present on a given payment processing system, and Rutter's specified that there is no indication that other customer information was accessed. Moreover, the general timeframe of when the payment card data were accessed was from 1 October 2018 through to 29 May 2019.
