USA: Senators introduce bill for the ethical use of facial recognition
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, announced, on 12 February 2020, that he, along with U.S. Senator Cory Booker had introduced Senate Bill ('SB') 3284 for the Ethical Use of Facial Recognition Act ('the Bill'). In particular, the Bill would, among other things, prohibit the use of federal funds to be used by state or local governments for investing in or purchasing facial recognition technology, and would create a commission to consider and create recommendations, to be delivered to the U.S. Congress within 18 months, in order to ensure that any future federal use of facial recognition technology is limited to responsible uses that promote public safety and protect privacy.
