Cameroon: Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications addresses status of cybersecurity and cybercrime, recommends emergency plan
The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued, on 7 March 2022, a press release addressing the status of cybersecurity and cybercrime in Cameroon. In particular, the Ministry, among other things, reported that, according to the Director of the Incident Purpose Team from the National Agency for Information and Communication Technologies ('ANTIC'), the two most widespread cybercrimes in Cameroon are scamming and phishing. In addition, the Ministry outlined that, according to the Director, the rise in cybercrimes is linked, among others, to the absence of an operational cybersecurity policy, the obsolescence and absence of certain legal instruments, and the failure to comply with the standards and recommendations of the ANTIC.
Moreover, the Ministry specified that, together with other stakeholders, it had elaborated and adopted recommendations that will enable public authorities to have an emergency plan in place for cybersecurity and the use of social media by citizens in Cameroon. Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that 'it is a matter of reviewing the law on cybersecurity and cybercrime in Cameroon in order to adapt it to the current technological developments […]'.
