Costa Rica: MICITT announces cybersecurity incident at Municipality of Belen

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications ('MICITT') announced, on 26 October 2022, that the Municipality of Belen had experienced a cybersecurity incident, which is currently under investigation by the Technical Committee of Containment and Protection, comprised, among others, of the MICITT and the Information Security Incident Response Centre ('CSIRT-CR').

In particular, the MICITT detailed that the incident was caused by a cyber attack operated by a criminal group of hackers. Nonetheless, the MICITT stated that, in light of the analysis carried out, no data has been encrypted or damaged resulting in an obstacle to the operation of the municipality.
Lastly, the MICITT detailed that an inter-institutional group has been set up to deal with the incident, which has set out to work to ensure that services to the community are maintained and that there is constant reporting of what has happened.
