Ecuador: MINTEL announce use of Platform to combat Coronavirus in capital

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society ('MINTEL') announced, on 13 April 2020, that MINTEL and the Emergency Operations Committee of Pichincha ('COE') have delivered reports generated by the COVID-19 ('Coronavirus') Digital Platform ('the Platform') to the Mayor of Quito.

In particular, the Platform is aiding authorities in Quito to control the quarantine in order to ensure lockdown rules are not broken. Moreover, the Platform will track citizens using Apps, contact centres and geolocation tools in order to establish zonal fences and punish those who fail to comply.

Moreover, MINTEL highlighted that the telecommunications portfolio will geolocate gathering of more than 30 people by using cameras and big data from telecommunications companies, in order to enforce the separation of concentrated areas, such as markets, and to sanction those who violate the lockdown, fail to wear masks, and engage in unsafe conduct.
