EU: EDPS publishes blogpost on AI and facial recognition
The European Data Protection Supervisor ('EDPS'), Wojciech Wiewiórowski, published, on 21 February 2020, a blogpost ('the Blogpost') explaining the EU's approach to artificial intelligence ('AI') and facial recognition. In particular, the EDPS noted the importance of, among other things, agreeing on how to apply key General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/979) ('GDPR') principles, such as data minimisation, accountability, and transparency to AI technology, as well as understanding the contrast between the principle of data minimisation and Big Data, and the criteria that research activities must meet to fall under the scientific research derogations provided by the GDPR. In addition, the EDPS highlighted that the use of facial recognition to identify an individual in a public place is significantly more intrusive than face authentication to unlock one's smartphone.
