Jamaica: JIS announces Committee re-convention to approve data protection bill
The Jamaica Information Service ('JIS') announced, on 25 May 2019, that the Joint Select Committee of Parliament ('the Committee') is to be re-convened no later than June 2019 to approve the bill for the Data Protection Act, 2017 ('the Bill'). In particular, the JIS noted that Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Fayval Williams, highlighted that the Committee will take the Bill back to the Parliament of Jamaica following a series of public consultations. Furthermore, Williams outlined that the Bill provides more rights to individuals regarding control and use of their data, that it includes a requirement to develop data privacy policies ensuring that data being processed is obtained fairly and lawfully, and that the processing is consistent with the purpose for which it was collected.
