Norway: Datatilsynet publishes strategy for work with AI

On March 22, 2024, the Norwegian data protection authority (Datatilsynet) published a strategy for its internal and external work with artificial intelligence (AI). According to the Datatilsynet, the strategy supports its 2024-2027 strategy and aims to contribute to having a coordinated and unified approach to AI both internally in its own operations and externally towards society.

More specifically, the strategy is divided into two sections, namely, internal and external, and each section is divided into sub-goals. Externally, the Datatilsynet describes the following sub-goals to explain how it will work externally towards the responsible development and use of AI:

  • actively using tools to contribute to the responsible development and use of AI;
  • learning and sharing experiences from the AI sandbox;
  • collaborating with external partners to raise the quality of Datatilsynet's work and reach relevant target groups; and
  • having an active relationship with new legislation in the field of AI.

Additionally, the Datatilsynet describes the following sub-goals to explain how it will work internally to contribute to the responsible development and use of AI within the Datatilsynet:

  • building expertise in AI;
  • ensuring a good distribution of responsibility and coordination across Datatilsynet;
  • using AI tools to streamline and increase the quality of tasks in a responsible way;
  • further developing a supervisory methodology for AI; and
  • developing internal guidance and guidelines for the use of AI.

You can read the press release here and the strategy here, both only available in Norwegian.
