Norway: Datatilsynet selects four projects exploring generative AI for fifth sandbox

On December 21, 2023, the Norwegian data protection authority (Datatilsynet) announced the four projects chosen for its fifth regulatory sandbox round. The Datatilsynet highlighted that these projects will explore important privacy-related challenges within the context of innovation and digitalization.

What were the chosen projects for Datatilsynet's next sandbox round?

The Datatilsynet emphasized that, while not specifically planned, generative artificial intelligence (AI) emerged as a common thread among the selected projects, including:

  • a project from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to explore how public actors can utilize Microsoft's 365 Copilot while navigating data privacy concerns;
  • a project from the Directorate of Health to investigate if generative AI can personalize healthcare information for patients, particularly children and young people; and
  • a project from Juridisk ABC to leverage generative AI for legal advice related to employment law.

Beyond AI, the sandbox also selected a project from Akershus University Hospital HF (Ahus) focusing on simplifying data sharing in healthcare and an age-appropriate relative login solution, also known as a digital power of attorney scheme.

Furthermore, the Datatilsynet confirmed that the chosen projects align with its priorities, AI and children's and young people's privacy, and that the sandbox is to serve as a guidance method, especially in these areas of limited legal practice.
