Republic of North Macedonia: DZLP announces new Law on Personal Data Protection

The Directorate for Personal Data Protection ('DZLP') announced, on 18 February 2020, that the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia had adopted, on 16 February 2020, the Law on Personal Data Protection 2020 ('the Law'). In particular, the Law applies to the wholly or partially automated personal data processing, if the controller or processor is established in the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia, whether the data is processed on the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia or beyond its borders. Moreover, the Law harmonises with the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR') and sets out, among other things, principles related to data processing, lawful bases, and data subject rights.

The Law will enter into force on the eighth day following its publication.

You can read the press release here and the Law here, both only available in Macedonian.
