Romania: MCID publishes national AI strategy

On February 1, 2024, the Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitization (MCID) announced the publication of the national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy for 2024-2027, accompanied by the draft government decision for its adoption and the memorandum.

What are the priorities of the national AI strategy?

In particular, the national strategy prioritizes, among others:

  • implementing digital transformation, based on several strategic axes: digital public administration, digital economy, digital education, cybersecurity, digital communications, and technologies of the future, where AI is mentioned alongside technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), quantum communications, robotics, blockchain, and smart cities;
  • adapting the military body to the evolution of AI technologies;
  • promoting actions to automate justice processes through AI tools;
  • protecting riverbeds or ensuring the integrity of the forest fund with the use of AI systems;
  • developing an AI system capable of identifying the weak points of the education system;
  • developing a government cloud system, which will allow the use of AI, machine learning, and big data technologies to improve services in specific areas, such as health care and public administration; and
  • developing and adopting trends in IoT, AI, robotics, big data, or connectivity in order to operate in a data-driven economy.
