Rwanda: NCSA officially launches its data protection office
The National Cyber Security Authority ('NCSA') announced, on 31 March 2022, that it had launched its data protection office, as part of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Rwanda's official launch event. In particular, the NCSA noted that the mission of the data protection office is to lead on activities that ensure protection of personal data and guarantee the privacy of individuals in Rwanda. In addition, the NCSA outlined that its data protection office will serve as the headquarters for all of these activities. Furthermore, the NCSA clarified that its data protection office will oversee the following:
- registration of data controllers and data processors in Rwanda;
- investigations of complaints;
- the conduct of data compliance audits;
- sensitisation of the Law No. 058/2021 of 13 October 2021 relating to the Protection of Personal Data and Privacy; and
- research on data processing and computer technology; and exercise control on all personal data protection issues.
