China: MIIT announces Telecommunications Service Quality during the 2024 first quarter

On April 26, 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced the Telecommunications Service Quality in the first quarter of 2024.

In particular, the MIIT outlined, among others:

  • key tasks of telecommunications services:
    • improving the level of information and communication services, including making full use of artificial intelligence (AI);
    • guiding the standardized development of apps by publishing 'Technical Requirements for the Protection of Personal Information of Telecommunications and Internet Service Users' and 11 industry standards including the 'Requirements for Personal Information Management System of Telecommunications and Internet Applications;' and
    • strengthening the management of unsolicited commercial electronic information, including reinforcing the handling of complaints and unblocking complaint channels; and
  • statistics on complaints and appeals:
    • 44.9% of complaints concerned marketing and payments;
    • 15.1% of complaints were on personal information protection; and
    • 27% of the complaints concerned bad mobile apps and unsolicited commercial electronic messages.

The MIIT also reminded users that to prevent possible leaks of personal information, they are advised to unlink and change their phone number or cancel the application account before deregistering a phone number.
