International: Canada OPC signs MoU with ADGM Commissioner

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada ('OPC') announced, on 3 June 2022, that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding ('MoU') with the Commissioner of Data Protection of the Abu Dhabi Global Market ('ADGM Commissioner'). In particular, the MoU promotes mutual assistance in the enforcement of laws protecting personal information in the private sector.

In addition, the MoU outlines the objectives of its participants, including:

  • cooperation with respect to the enforcement of applicable privacy laws, the sharing of relevant information, and the handling of complaints in which the participants are mutually interested;
  • fostering research and education related to the protection of personal information;
  • promotion of a better understanding by each participant of economic and legal conditions and theories relevant to the enforcement of the applicable privacy laws;
  • communication on matters of mutual interest; and
  • mutual consultation on any issues which have significant implications for both participants.
