New Jersey: Bill on personal information deletion by car rental providers introduced to Assembly

On February 27, 2024, Assembly Bill 3859 requiring car rental companies to delete personal information of customers was introduced to the New Jersey State Assembly.

In particular, the bill specifies that when a rented vehicle is returned to a rental car company, the rental car company must delete the personal information of a renter from the motor vehicle computer system by performing data-clearing protocols in accordance with the Guidelines for Media Sanitization developed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). Using techniques specified by the vehicle manufacturer to overwrite data or by using a menu option to reset the device to the original factory settings.

The bill provides for its entrance into effect on its passage.
