New Zealand: Privacy Commissioner addresses biometric technology
On February 29, 2024, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of New Zealand (OPC) published the February issue of its Privacy News series, in which the Privacy Commissioner discussed the role of biometric technologies in the lives of New Zealanders and called for greater regulation.
In particular, the Privacy Commissioner mentioned that biometric technologies, like facial recognition, are increasingly used by businesses and organizations, raising concerns about privacy, surveillance, and discrimination. The Privacy Commissioner acknowledged the potential benefits of these technologies but highlighted the need for regulation, and that new rules for biometrics are currently being developed.
Furthermore, the Privacy Commissioner emphasized the importance of privacy and encouraged all New Zealanders to participate in public consultation on the biometric exposure draft code, which will soon be opened. The public can also be notified of the submission period for the consultation when it opens by sending an email to [email protected].
