South Korea: PIPC announces investigation of overseas companies

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced on March 7, 2024, that it has been conducting an investigation into the collection and processing of personal information by major overseas companies with a large scale of use since February 2024. The investigation is in response to issues raised by an audit from the National Assembly.

The PIPC stated that it plans to check:

  • the adequacy of personal information processing policies;
  • overseas transfers; and
  • safety measure obligations under the Personal Information Protection Act 2021 (as amended in 2023) (PIPA).

The PIPC highlighted that if violations are confirmed, it will take action under the relevant laws and regulations.
