UAE: Artificial Intelligence Office publishes Responsible Metaverse Self-Governance Framework white paper

On October 9, 2023, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Office, in collaboration with Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism launched the Responsible Metaverse Self-Governance Framework white paper. Among other things, the white paper discusses the proposed principles of self-regulation within the metaverse and highlights key uses of the metaverse including its challenges such as data protection, privacy, digital well-being, and intellectual property protection.

Outlined within the report are nine self-regulatory principles for the metaverse. These include:

  • Interoperability for Access, ensuring users can seamlessly transition their data, digital assets, and identities across diverse platforms;
  • Privacy by Design and Default;
  • Sustainability by Design;
  • Reciprocity and Transparency for Trust;
  • Fairness, Equality, and Inclusiveness;
  • Commitment to Diversity;
  • Accountability; and
  • Safety by Design and Beneficence.

The white paper also emphasizes the benefits of applying self-regulation principles, including building trust, credibility, commitment to ethical practices, and user protection.
