International: EU and Japan sign protocol on cross-border data flows
On January 31, 2024, the European Commission announced that the EU had signed a protocol to include provisions on cross-border data flows in the agreement between the EU and Japan for an Economic Partnership following an agreement between the parties. The Commission explained that the protocol will ensure that data flows between the EU and Japan will not be hampered by unjustified data localization measures, and also ensure the benefits from the free flow of data according to the EU and Japan's rules on data protection and the digital economy.
Once the protocol has been ratified by Japan, and the two sides have notified each other about completing their internal procedures, it can enter into force.
