Japan: PPC publishes updated international strategy

On March 27, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) published its updated international strategy.

The PPC outlined several initiatives in the international strategy, including:

  • further development of mutual recognition for smooth personal transfers with countries and regions with personal information protection systems recognized to be at the same level as that of Japan;

  • a revision of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Act No. 57 of 2003 as amended in 2020) (APPI) regarding the mutual recognition framework between Japan and the EU and Japan and the UK;

  • promotion of the spread of international corporate certification systems, particularly by the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum;

  • introduction of global model contractual clauses with countries and regions that share values; and

  • strengthening and building international cooperative relationships with relevant countries and regions, including enforcement cooperation.

You can read the updated international strategy, only available in Japanese, here.
