Indonesia: Kominfo announces preparation of regulations on governance of AI technology

On April 23, 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) announced that it is currently preparing regulations regarding the Governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology (Regulations).

In particular, Kominfo clarified that the Regulations are prepared referring to international best practices, such as the application of the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) recommended by UNESCO.

Furthermore, Kominfo outlined that two approaches are used to formulate regulations related to AI technology:

  • horizontal - via the Information and Electronic Transactions Law, Personal Data Protection Law, and the Circular Letter of the Minister of Kominfo concerning AI Ethics; and
  • vertical - via sectors, such as the financial and health sectors.

Kominfo stated that it continues to seek references in drafting by attending international forums such as the AI Safety Summit 2023, to mix approaches from both Europe and America.
